This post explains the interface numbering scheme used in Cisco 1800, Cisco 2800 and Cisco 3800 Series Routers. It also includes line numbering associated with async interfaces.

Existing router platforms (earlier than Cisco 1800, Cisco 2800, and Cisco 3800) contain a limitation. In some situations, such as when you insert WIC(s) out of order, the configuration of one WIC interface can be lost or applied to another WIC interface.

Example: Assume that you have a serial WIC-2T in WIC slot 1 and WIC slot 0 is empty. The interfaces are named serial 0/0 and serial 0/1. If you insert another WIC-2T into slot 0, the new WIC interfaces are named serial 0/0 and serial 0/1. The old WIC interfaces become serial 0/2 and serial 0/3. Therefore, the old WIC interface configuration moves to the new WIC interfaces.

Refer to How Async Lines are Numbered in Cisco 3600 Series Routers for more information.

In order to overcome this limitation, Cisco 1800, Cisco 2800, and Cisco3800 series platforms now have a three-tiered interface numbering format (slot/subslot/port) for interfaces on WIC slots only.

Note: The slot information for the Cisco 3800 series is the same as the 2800/1800 interface and line numbering. See New Interface and Line Number Conventions for information on interface and line numbering.

New Interface and Line Number Conventions

This section describes the new conventions for interface and line numbering.

  1. The interface numbering scheme is the same for async interfaces and non-async interfaces. To configure the line associated with an async interface, use the interface number to specify the async line. For example, line 0/0/0 specifies the line associated with interface serial 0/0/0 on a WIC-2A/S in slot 0. Similarly, line 0/1/1 specifies the line associated with interface async 0/1/1 on a WIC-2AM in slot 1.

Note: This document uses the following words interchangeably:

    • Network-module-slot and slot.
    • Interface-card-slot and subslot.
  2. Ports on network modules are numbered like this:interface-number = network-module-slot/port

    OR

    interface-number = slot/port

  3. Ports on interface cards (such as WICs, VWICs and HWICs) installed directly in chassis slots is given here:interface-number = 0/interface-card-slot/port

    OR

    interface-number = 0/subslot/port

  4. This numbering convention is used for ports on interface cards that are installed in network module slots:interface-number = network-module-slot/interface-card-slot/port

    OR

    interface-number = slot/subslot/port

Note: The slot/subslot/port format only applies to WIC interfaces. Interfaces that are native to the network modules still use only the slot/port format. That is:

    • <interface-name> slot/port is used whenever the interfaces are native on the network module.
    • <interface-name> slot/subslot/port is used whenever the interfaces are on the WIC slot of a network module (NM).
  5. Here is an example for numbering when the motherboard slot number is always 0. The native interfaces on the motherboard are numbered like this:
    • Fa0/0, Fa0/1 on Cisco 2811.
    • Gi0/0, and Gi0/1 on Cisco 2821 and Cisco 2851.

The Motherboard WIC slots are numbered from 0 to 3. The number increments from right to left, and from bottom to top.

  6. Slot numbers for other slots increase from bottom to top, then right to left. Subslot numbers and port numbers within a slot also increase from bottom to top, then right to left.

Examples

Interfaces native to an extension network module (ENM):

If the ENM carries WIC cards, the WIC slot numbers start from 0:

The extension voice module (EVM) slot analog interfaces are numbered from voice-port 2/0/0 to voice-port 2/0/23, following the NM-HDA convention.

Interface Numbering

This section lists the interface numbering details for Cisco routers.

Table 1 – Interface Numbering on Cisco 1841

  • The “Tty” column displays the interface number (which is the same number we use to identify the line).
  • The “Line” column displays the actual line number. The actual line number associated with each interface is determined by complicated equations that vary according to the hardware setup (such as a network module, interface card or interface card in a network module). On these platforms, the line numbers have limited significance. The same can be used in the reverse telnet process. Ideally, rotary under the line configuration should be widely used for reverse telnet applications.
  • For asynchronous or synchronous ports, such as those on the WIC-2A/S, NM-4A/S, NM-8A/S, and NM-16A/S, you must enter the physical-layer async command in serial interface configuration mode before the associated async line can appear in the show line command output (see Example 2).

Cisco WAN :: 1941 ADSL Fail Over To 3G HWIC With IPSEC VPN

Jul 23, 2012

The setup is a S2S VPN with failover to 3G HWIC in a Cisco 1941 however the IPSEC tunnel needs to remain up through 3G if ADSL fails. The failover works ok, however when plugging ADSL back in, the - 'sh crypto session' shows both dialer 0, and dialer 1 with the crypto map session to the other side of the VPN and either side is now not pingable. The NoIP DDNS updater client runs on a server in the network and all IP resolution to host1,host2 works ok (other side of VPN is Cisco 1921 with ADSL HWIC and 3G HWIC). Cisco WAN :: 1941 Why Would CPU Usage Hover Around 45% Or So With One Machine Running Torrents

Jan 27, 2013

I am running a 1941 isr g2 router, which, according to my specs is equivalent to a cisco 3825 - which i also own.Why would the cpu usage hover around 45% or so with ONE machine running torrents? There is really no packet inspection etc...or anything else that would cause the cpu to work really hard...I am on a 100/5 connection.

How To Make Modem Plug Into Switch Instead Of Router

Sep 6, 2011

I have a network set up currently with a cable modem that goes into a router, the router then goes to a 16 port switch and the switch goes to computers, printers, and my server. I am trying to figure out how to make the modem plug into the switch instead of the router. I'm guessing my problem lies with the default gateway since that is the router. Any suggestions on this? Or how is the best way to set this up? I have 2 NICs on my server and the server has windows 2008 r2.

Linksys Wireless Router :: WRT54G V1 Disconnect Power From Router For About 15 Seconds / Plug It Back In

Apr 27, 2013

I have a Linksys WRT54G2 v1 router which is having a daily problem of connectiing to the Internet on my home wireless LAN. My temporary solution is to disconnect the power from the router for about 15 seconds and plug it back in .... and all is well.... at least for another day or so.The real problem is that instead of properly connecting to IPv4 address 192.168.1.100 ..... it randomly connects to Autoconfiguration IPv4 address 169.254.29.54 When this problem occurs the SSID list shows both my 192 connection as well as a public network with no Internet connection?
I've used this router for several years without a problem until I recently bought a new Canon wireless MG5320 printer which initially had problems connecting to my LAN. After a telco with tech support the printer works fine but now I am now experiencing the Autoconfig address problem. My LAN consist of the WRT54G router, a Motorola cable modem, a Lenovo laptop running Win7 64bit, a Hp desktop running Win7 64bit and the Canon wireless printer. (all connected wirelessly)

Linksys Wireless Router :: EA3500 Disconnect After Plug In Portable Hard Drive

Mar 6, 2013

I bought an EA 3500 refurbished through linksys. I can't configurate it using the CD-Rom. Always said 'can't find your router'. So I flash with the classic firmware, and it fixs the problem and automatically upgrade to smart Wi-Fi. That being said, whenever I plug in a portable hard drive, the router disconnect from internet after a minute. I tried my seagate HDD and also my flash driver. Both Lost internet after a minute or so. So I think it is probably the router's problem.

Cisco Firewall :: Configuration Migration From ASA 5540 Running 7.2 To 5525X Running 9.1

I need to replace an existing ASA 5540 with a new ASA 5525X. I would like to pre-stage and configure the new box with the existing config, migrate license and export certificate files before swapping it with the old one during a change window. The new firewall will run 9.1 on deployment. Now the same 7.2(4) cannot just be copied over to 5525X running the minimum 8.6 version. There is a Web based tool available at [URL] according to Cisco documentation but the page does not load for me (Cisco intranet only tool ?). Is there another tool for automatic conversion ?

Cisco WAN :: Adding A HWIC 1FE Card To 2811 Router?

May 19, 2011

I have a 2811 router runnning IOS 12.4(21) and have added an HWIC 1FE card to slot 2. But the card doesnot show up in the router and all the three lights on the HWIC card is steady green. I have gone through some cisco documentation and found that i have to upgrade the IOS.
I have few questions before doing the upgrade.
1. Which IOS version should I upgrade to?
2. Will this erase my exisitng running configuration ? I have VPN services, PPPoATM, PBR etc.. all running on this router at present.
3. Presently i have a 128 MB CF card on the router. Will this be enough or do i need to upgrade this card also? Can i choose an IOS which will fit into this card otherwise while keeping all existng features?
4. I want to use the HWIC card for the ISP's internet service through PPPoE. Will this be possible with the upgraded IOS ?

Cisco WAN :: HWIC-3G-CDMA-S - Can't Access Router From Internet

Mar 31, 2012

The problem is I can't access the router from the internet. I am also an ocean away from the site. I have an ugly hack set up where I access an inside PC with Teamviewer and then puTTy to the router, but it is slow, ugly, and doesn't fix my problem. I need to be able to set up internet accessible servers at this location for VOIP, VPN, and REAL remote access.Everything else works fine. Connection is stable. Speed is kinda ******, but that's not so important.
First off some specs:Cisco 2801c2801-ipvoicek9-mz.124-24.T1.binhwic-3g-cdma-sSprint 3G data plan
Ok, I have set up the previous equipment as a router for a branch office where 3G access is the only available internet access.I have had the excruciating experience of talking with Sprint Tech Support, and would rather shoot myself in the foot than do so again.
Here is what they told me: 'They block ports, but they can't tell me which ones.'Here is relevant info I have been able to gather. The IP connection the ISP gives us is not NATTED. That is the address at wimi.com and show int dialer 0 is the same one. Most forums say Sprint only blocks port 80.Zenmap (nmap for windows) says the router has NO open ports but DOES exist.Router does not respond to pingsCan't SSH into router from internetCan't access a test local server with port 8080 or 8081 open with the correct nat statement in Cisco routerNo filtering access-list for testing The config should be just fine as a base config for using hwic-3g-cdma-s as the main internet access interface for a router. Everything works fine aside from the lack of remote access.
So in my head it has to be one of 3 problems.
1. The card is doing some weird stuff to incoming requests
2. Sprint is blocking WAN requests on port 22, 2200, 8080, and 8081 and pings (tested). Maybe they block all WAN requests?
3. There is something wrong with my config.
why I can't remote access into my router or things to try with the config?
Below are some config pastes:
chat-script cdma ' 'ATDT#777' TIMEOUT 60 'CONNECT'
!
ip ssh authentication-retries 2
ip ssh port 2200 rotary 1
ip ssh version 2
