Black Panther may be coming for Captain America: The Winter Soldier‘s crown as the Marvel movie with the most thrilling fight sequences.

Klaue served as the main antagonist in Black Panther but the villain also gave the film some its most standout (and hilarious) moments. When Klaue and his entourage entered the casino in Korea. In the latest installment of Vanity Fair's Notes on a Scene, BLACK PANTHER director and co-writer Ryan Coogler broke down the casino fight sequence. Coogler offers up a variety of intriguing.

The newest Marvel Studios movie screened early to rave reviews on Monday night, and Disney is doubling down on the hype by releasing a full one-minute clip of T’Challa (Chadwick Boseman) and his team negotiating a fraught deal with Klaw (Andy Serkis). But things go wrong and it leads to one of the most kinetic, thrilling fight sequences we’ve seen in a Marvel movie yet.

Although much of the film’s actual story is still veiled in secrecy, we have a better grasp of the plot of Black Panther thanks to the early buzz and the flurry of TV spots that Disney and Marvel have released. But this is one of the first full scenes that we’ve seen of Black Panther, though it comes free of context. The one-minute scene takes place in a casino that we’ve seen glimpses of before, where Martin Freeman’s Everett K. Ross seems to be negotiating a deal with Klaw as T’Challa, Nakia (Lupita Nyong’o), and Okoye (Danai Gurira) scope out the room.

Black Panther Clip

First, I would gladly give my firstborn to Danai Gurira, queen of my heart and of this scene. Second, Black Panther is promising to be the movie that breaks the tradition of Marvel movies getting criticized for looking bland. Even in a dimly lit casino, the red and black colors pop, which lends to the absolutely brilliant fight choreography shown off by Gurira, Boseman, and Nyong’o.

Props to Ryan Coogler for eschewing choppy fight editing in favor of long takes that gracefully move the camera to different fights, never letting the action cease. We move from Gurira throwing a man over the balcony, to the chaos that erupts around T’Challa as the shoot-up begins, and to Nakia disarming another man. But the centerpiece of this scene is Gurira smoothly wielding her spear, fighting off dozens of men in choreography that could rival that of John Wick. It’s astonishing, and I’ve watched it 10 times.

Black Panther also stars Michael B. Jordan, Daniel Kaluuya, Letitia Wright, Winston Duke, Angela Bassett, and Forest Whitaker.

Here is the official synopsis for Black Panther:

In the hype-filled weeks leading up to the release ofBlack Panther, one of the few scenes to be shown in its entirety was the casino fight scene. And for good reason.

In a movie teeming with exciting action scenes, the casino fight stands out. Taking place on two levels of an illicit casino in South Korea, it’s perhaps the most stylish and stylized of all the battles in Black Panther not simply because of T’Challa (Chadwick Boseman), Nakia (Lupita Nyong’o), and Okoye’s (Danai Gurira) glamorous outfits. It’s because the scene has the balletic choreography and assured camera work of a great action film. And for a Marvel movie, that’s saying something.

In a video for Vanity Fair, director Ryan Coogler breaks down the minutiae of the scene, including everything from the colors of T’Challa, Nakia, and Okoye’s outfits, to that iconic wig-throwing moment.

The Black Panther casino fight scene is a dynamic and sleek riff on James Bond movies — a franchise that directorCoogler cited as a heavy inspiration for Black Panther — as well as a sly homage to the movie’s pan-African roots.

One of my favorite things about this scene is the confident camera movement from the first to second floor midway through the fight scene — showcasing the action in one long take. It’s a technique that Coogler has used before in Fruitvale Station and Creed, and he goes into fascinating detail about how hard it was to pull off here. “It took several takes,” Coogler says. “What we had to do is we had to float a camera up with a cable rig. There’s no green screen here, it’s all happening live and direct.”

There are some other really cool factoids, like the purposeful reflection of the colors of the Pan-African flag in the trio’s red, green, and black outfits, as well as the distinction between their different fighting styles. Pay attention especially when Coogler goes into the fighting style of Okoye — the true star of this scene. So much research has gone into creating a full portrait of Okoye and the Dora Milaje, and most of it goes unsaid in the movie. It’s incredibly fun to see Coogler reveal those details like the giddy fanboy he is.
